Is this okay?

Hey peeps, I have a question for y'all.

Adam and I went to a local doughnut establishment a while back and aside from the employees, we were the only people in the place. So Adam, who suffers from a severe condition known as TV paralysis, asked if he could turn off the TV in the dining area (can you even call it a dining area if it's a doughnut shop??) in order to hold an actual conversation. The lady who served us was hesitant, but gave the okay.

Here's my question: is that appropriate behavior? On the one hand, it was Fox News. But on the other hand, we don't own the place. The owners can run the shop however they see fit; if they want a TV on during working hours, who are we to get in their faces about it? Adam sees no problem with what he did. He probably would have asked even if other customers had been present. In this situation, however, I don't think the customer is always right. Because like I said, I don't own the place. And if I don't want to suck down a chocolate-frosted cream-filled pastry with Glenn Beck yammering on in the background, I can choose to go elsewhere.

What do you think? (About the issue, not my oh-so-subtle political jabs, which I should probably apologize for, but won't because I'm a little irritated with the Republican party at the moment. The Democrat party, too, now that I think about it. I may move to England.)

But really, I'd like to know what other people think. I'm not looking for a right or wrong answer here. Lemme have it.

I think that because you guys were the only customers in the shop at the time it was perfectly okay... if other customers had been there and were obviously watching it I wouldn't have asked to turn it off... but if they were also trying to ignore it, ya I would have asked then too.:)

P.S. totally get you on being pissed at both political parties atm... and (yes I'm going to say it) if Mr Paul gets a party ticket I think I will seriously consider moving to Canada or maybe become a rabid activist, etc etc blah blah blah... also, Mr. Beck can be incredibly irresponsible in the things he says.

I think it was fine. Presumably, the TV is there for the customers, so if you guys were the only ones there, and didn't want it on, I think it's fine to turn it off, just as it would be fine to ask to turn it on.

No issues here...Totally appropriate. Was it loud? I like it when they are muted with closed caption.

I really like Glenn Beck. Mostly for the entertainment, though. He can be totally off the wall sometimes.

Ditto what Kristina said, exactly.

I think you ladies are right - I suppose I was looking at the situation from the owner's perspective and not my own, as a customer. I tend to always argue the other side.

Well, that and I would cut off my own leg to avoid any kind of confrontation, but that's neither here nor there.

I was gonna argue for the "maybe don't do it" but then I read the comments. Kristina kinda changed my mind. But I'm also in the "don't do anything that may be construed as confrontation category" so I wouldn't have said anything either way:)

Maybe a happy medium, and just turn down the volume. But I don't think it was bad to turn it off when you're alone in the shop. Maybe just turn it back on again when you leave.

I think it's just fine to ask to turn the TV off. They could have said "no" - and it's they're place, so they can say no if they want to.

(Read: you can't complain if they WON'T turn it off, ya know?)

I have totally asked to turn TVs off - or to switch channels.

all political leanings aside (registered Independent here...) I think it was just fine. I'm always annoyed at the car place when the TV is on some cooking show which obviously nobody is watching... just let me enjoy my hour away from kids and read in peace already!!!

I'm completely disgusted with both parties, too. Which is one of the things I like most about Glenn Beck.

But politics aside - - if you're the only ones in there, I say make yourself happy. They can always just say no if they themselves are watching it, right?

Turning the TV off when you were the only people in the store is cool. Better that than changing the channel to some porno movie or something. Because, really, there are some things that are worse to watch than political crapfests.

First of all, I would have to say that OFF IT GOES is the answer :)

If I was the manager/owner of any type of restaurant or whatever you want to categorize that place. I would have to say that I don't think the TV was for them. If the chick was hesitant, you know they were watching it. Shame on them for bad customer service....(coming from a previous store manager experience).

As for Adam, I like going in public with you and Adam especially when we went to sushi and we were nearly placed by the "drunk'n table of idiots" until brave Adam stood up for us all and demanded a place away from the morally challenged group of guys. I was going to, but I like to play the "I would rather not" game. Adam is all outward, rude or not (that's what's so great about Adam in my opinion). Ohh wait I think I went off on a tangent...sorry, I think me being off my meds have made a difference, don't worry tomorrow I will be picking them up from the pharmacy. Did I tell you what my insurance did??? Ohh wait, there I go again :)

Back on subject....
I think that Adam was in the right, I don't think he was wrong at all. However, because you were the only customers there I feel that it was OK, if however you weren't I would have to disagree. I don't think that Adam would have asked to turn it off. I think he would have either walked out or something like that. He is considerate of others.

Thanks for the topic. Makes me wonder if I'm just mean, because I wouldn't care about the confrontation my self...Jake would ask me not to be rude or whatever. But I would probably do the same thing Adam did and not think twice about it :) But sometimes I go looking for a fight LOL. Not with you though, so no worries there....

There I go again....I'm done :)

Yeah, if you're the only ones there, it's totally okay. The owners should be more concerned about your comfort than vice versa.

So, once I was in a car wash place with my toddler. No one was watching the TV so I asked them to change it to the Disney Channel...

I hope it is ok, because if not, I am going to have more guilt. And I hate guilt.

There is no harm in asking, is there?

If they do not like it they can always say no.
